There are numerous types of yoga performed all over the world and many believe it all began more than five thousand years ago in the northern area of India. Yoga is great for releasing stress, for improving your health; it can provide relief from neck and back pain, increase your strength, flexibility and improve your balance.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is practiced by more people in the United States than any other type of yoga. If you are just beginning with yoga you might want to seriously consider Hatha yoga. Most of the routines you practice require smooth and slow movement. You combine yoga breathing techniques with slow gentle movements.

Hatha yoga provides you an opportunity to get a good stretch, get your muscles active and reduce stress. Iyengar is a variety of Hatha yoga but it tends to focus on body alignment and improving your balance. You are supposed to hold the yoga poses, also called asanas for a longer period of time. They also use yoga props such as blocks and straps.

Ashtanga Yoga

This type of yoga is considered power yoga and builds up your strength and increases your endurance. It is considered to be an aggressive type of yoga in which you quickly go from one position to a different position. Meditation is a small factor in this variation of yoga. This is the type of yoga for people who want a challenging workout.

Bikram Yoga

This type of yoga is performed in a room that usually has a temperature of about one hundred and five degrees Fahrenheit. The concept is that the hot yoga room will induce sweating which helps to cleanse your body and can help with chronic pain. Some doctors are concerned about the possibility of dehydration, cardiac problems and you can have undesirable changes in your blood pressure. If you have heart problems or high blood pressure you should avoid this type of yoga.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga focuses on breathing as well as quickly going through the yoga positions and it also emphasizes mediation. It is considered to be more spiritual than Hatha yoga. It is more challenging than Hatha yoga and thus Hatha yoga is a better style of yoga for beginners.

Iyenger Yoga

Is a gentler style of yoga and is ideal for people new to yoga and for those who don’t have exercise involved in their lifestyle. When practicing this type of yoga you will typically be using a variety of items including straps, blocks, chairs and pillows. These items are used to assist people who are not very flexible.

There are other types of yoga that are performed all over the world. You can obtain health benefits, reduce stress and increase your balance and flexibility with yoga. If you have health problems you should consult with your doctor before practicing yoga.
