The Basic Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has long been shown to include many benefits. Benefits include physical, psychological, and biochemical properties. People from all walks of life have seen the benefits of yoga and the holistic approach to complete health care.

As we age, many of us find that we are suffering from chronic back pain. Yoga, and the stretching involved with it, has proved to be a good way to combat that pain. Due to the fact that posture is central to the practice of yoga, it can relieve pain by aligning the body to the correct position. Bad posture almost always equals back pain.

Like many people in our society you might be looking to not only lose weight, but to maintain that weight loss. Magazines, newspapers and televisions shows are flooded with information about the benefits of reaching and maintaining a healthy weight for your age. By speeding up our metabolism, we will also speed up how quickly we will lose weight. Yoga helps this process occur, along with a proper diet, yoga can help those wishing to lose weight keep it off.

As well as being beneficial to maintaining an appropriate weight, yoga can help to improve conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. For those suffering from arthritis, yoga helps to make joints more supple, in turn increasing muscle joint mobility. The pain suffered can be relieved with the stretching involved with the regular practice of yoga. Along with joint and muscle health, yoga improves conditions like high blood pressure and also will decrease the amount of bad cholesterol within the blood, at the same time promoting the good cholesterol we all hear about.   

Having looked at the benefits to the physical body, organs and joints, we should also note that the benefits to yoga are also seen from a psychological stand point. Taking the time to practise yoga daily, or a few times a week will lower stress levels and help you deal with your daily routine. Yoga has been shown to improve mood and overall happiness. it is important in a busy life to take time for ourselves. A few hours a week to ourselves will help improve our sense of well being and  help us centre ourselves so we can take on challenges that home or work life throws at us. Having looked at the advantages to our body, joints and muscles by practising yoga, we shouldn’t forget about the improvement yoga has to our overall sense of well being. Taking a few hours a week for ourselves can lower and maintain stress levels and help how we deal with new stresses when they do arise. It become easier to deal with stress if you can take the time to let some of it go, this not only will improve the way you deal with stress, but will help with your mood overall.

Yoga as you can see, has many health benefits it has been practised for centuries by people around the world and improved their lives, hopefully after reading this article you will consider making yoga a part of you regular health and fitness routine.
