More than Four Thousand Years in the History of Yoga

Since the beginning of its creation, yoga has always meant a bringing together of the mind and body in perfect union and since that time, the main intentions of yoga have not changed, but have improved and been refined. Originally from the country of India, the brief history of Yoga has a lot of tradition embodied in its movements and is a fitness system that incorporates the mental, spiritual and physical health for an individual. In order to understand the history of yoga, you must understand the traditions involved and recognize the four cateogories of yoga, which are the pre-classical period, classical period, post-classical period and modern-day yoga styles.

The Book of Yoga Sutra

The book of yoga that is very important to the history of yoga is the yoga sutra and without it, the exercise would have not completed its classical period. The word yoga itself means the ëYolkí or something which joins other things together and a good example would be joining of a cart to the ox while using a yolk. Thus, you can easily infer that yoga has everything to do with uniting each and every aspect of the human being into one single entity.

You might think that yoga is just the contortion of the body into odd poses, but the history of yoga shows that there are ethics involved, meditation, controlled breathing exercises and physical postures as well.

Of late, modern yoga has undergone something of a renaissance and the history of Yoga has gone with the times and become more globalized and now there is a visible delineation between the religious aspects and the practice of yoga. The history of yoga has shown us that there are many different types of teaching methods and schools on yoga that allow different philosophies and approaches to the influential yoga poses.

The mind, body and spirit of the individual are still thought to work together, so despite the history of yoga, there is still a pure and true intention of the movements. Rather than see yoga simply as a way to stay lean and strong, the history of yoga teaches us that these postures will help to empower our lives through the use of better mind and body control over time for better health.
