When a person practices yoga or pilates, he or she does so on a surface able to withstand the demands the practitioner will need from it. As such, the surface must be soft enough to cushion the body, but firm enough to withstand the forces a yoga or pilates practitioner will exert upon it. A yoga mat must also be tough enough to be used for a long time, and it must also be priced within anyones' reach.

This is where a good eco friendly yoga mat comes in.

Traditional floor mats simply cushion the body; providing a good place to sit, lay back and relax. However, these types of mats were not designed to support one's body during intensive and physically-demanding sessions of yoga. Instability and damage are very real threats that someone practicing yoga exposes her or himself to with shoddy mats.

Yoga mats answer these needs specifically by taking the following factors into consideration:

Grip
It is essential that a yoga mat have a strong grip on the floor if one seeks to practice yoga in any form.

The forces that are exerted on a yoga mat are not just downward in nature. This means that a mat with poor grip will most likely slip and slide around when pressure is placed in the wrong direction. A mat that has been designed for the practice of yoga provides the stability that one needs in order practice the art with safety and stability.

Comfort
Part of a yoga mat's roles is to support the yoga practitioner's body as he or she undergoes the exercises.

More often than not, floors have a hard and uncomfortable surface to them. The problem is that floors aren't just uncomfortable, but could cause some serious injuries if someone new to yoga unknowingly places too much pressure on one or two points of the body. Cushioning the various parts of the body is then essential in order to spread out the weight; preventing any injuries to the bones and joints of the body as the practitioner goes about his or her business.

Durability
Of course, an eco friendly yoga mat has to be durable enough to withstand the constant wear and tear it will inevitably be subjected to.

All that stretching and supporting may be healthy for a person's body, but not for the underneath that person. There are certain materials that are more durable than others, and must be taken into consideration when it comes to the practice of yoga.

Cost
As with anything in life, a good mat must be within the price range of anyone who wishes to practice yoga.

Whether you have a synthetic plastic yoga mat or an eco friendly yoga mat made from natural threads and fibers, it does not need to cost an arm and a leg.
