The first practitioners of yoga practiced their meditation and asceticism without any accessories of any sort, except perhaps a mat. In fact, the very idea of yoga accessories probably ran counter to the ideas of those who first started the practice of yoga over 5,000 years ago.

Yoga in the first place involved asceticism, which meant life for a devotee of yoga had to be one of austerity and frugality. Material or physical wealth was not at all important, what was important was the spiritual strength that one could develop.

Yoga, has of course, physical aspects to it, otherwise most of us would not even be interested in it. The poses and stances of yoga, called asanas, which are known worldwide for their seeming impossibility, come to mind as being the most well-known aspect of the practice.

These poses are meant to aid in meditation and the unlocking of the secrets of the self and perhaps the universe. The constant practice of the asana were said to grant the practitioners uncanny abilities as well. Yoga accessories available during this period included of course the yoga mat.

However, some Hindu yoga ascetics used yoga accessories such as barbs and spikes which they drove into their flesh in order to amplify their meditative state. Practices with these yoga accessories continue today in India.

The World Craze on Yoga

Yoga was mostly a thing for Hindus until the Victorian Era in the late 19th century and early 20th century, when the ultra-charismatic Swami Vivekananda, an Indian philosopher and yoga practitioner, delivered lectures all over Europe and the United States on topics concerning Indian philosophy and yoga. Audiences were electrified and many had lifelong interests on yoga and started practicing it.

However, yoga had a limited, though very devoted appeal in the west. The real kick in the backside that propelled the practice of yoga to prominence was the emergence of the counterculture in the latter half of the 20th century and the subsequent materialism that came after it.

Yoga classes and yoga accessories became a economic force with revenue reaching 3 Billion USD annually in the past decade. A whole plethora of non-scary (when compared to spikes and barbs) kinds of yoga accessories became available to people who wanted the physical benefits of practicing yoga without immersing themselves in the spiritual aspects and the asceticism.

Yoga accessories now include aids for helping the practice of yoga such as pillows, yoga chairs, balls, and mats. These things would probably be frowned upon by traditionalists but when someone just needs to enjoy the physical aspects of yoga, one needs to consider that these yoga accessories can help keep the modern yoga student from suffering from injury.

Yoga for kids is becoming a lot more popular today. This is a thousands of years old form of exercise that brings with it proven benefits to both the body and the mind, which is important since so many youngsters are under a lot of stress. Of course, they are also facing a lot of anxiety and pressure as well. Through yoga some of this tension can be eased as children learn breathing and visualization techniques that help them learn how to concentrate, focus, relax and have self-control. Children can learn this in schools or at dance studios. Herein they will find that yoga is fun, which is good when you consider all of its various benefits.

What Yoga Teaches Children

Yoga can be specially designed and adapted to teach children many things, including: body awareness; increased flexibility; good listening skills; self-control; increased powers of observation; language skills; coordination; and cooperation. These are vital skills that children need to learn in order to grow up healthy and with a balanced outlook on life. Through yoga children are also able to learn about the environment, nature and how to use and develop their imagination.

How Yoga Is Taught To Children

All of this is achieved through lots of moving, singing, playing and imitating things. This helps to make it a fun activity. Of course, this can also be very beneficial if your child has ADD/ADHD. This is because yoga is able to provide these children with lots of motor and sensory stimulus. Herein there is a calm and confidence that is brought about that sometimes appears quite miraculous. Parents especially notice this once they learn such postures as the Warrior and Tree pose.

Of course, children are like adults in that they too need to relax every once in a while. This is where the relaxing music and visualization techniques of yoga help children learn to focus their breathing. Eventually this breathing will help a child learn how to stay calm and in control whenever they are in a stressful situations, regardless as to where this situation may take place.

Conclusion

It is never too early to start teaching your child yoga. This will provide your child with a holistic approach to developing a well-rounded, healthy personality. So, it really is a good idea to invest in yoga for your child, regardless as to what age they may be at right now.

When you set out studying yoga fundamental principles you will learn how to reflect. Nearly every class will dedicate a tiny part of the class to meditation. Yoga basics are all about learning to get in touch with your body and connecting your mind with your body. To do this you need to be able to clear your mind of all the usual anxieties and day-to-day thoughts to concentrate merely on your breathing.

There are some simple yoga poses that you should study as component of a yoga basic principles presentation. These yoga basics will help you to meditate more easily and will also help you to start your exploration of yoga gently.

When you acquire yoga fundamental principles they might strike you as not very athletic but their benefits are impressive and they will do marvels for a tired intellect and physical structure. The Siddhasana is a great pose to start your yoga basics introduction, as it will help you to meditate. First sit on your yoga mat with your buttocks firmly on your mat. Next cross your legs and place one leg on the inside touching your inner thigh. The other leg is on the outside touching the ankle of the inner leg.

When it comes to the hands you have diverse options for these yoga basic principles. You can either place your hands in your lap with the palms facing up or down, or you can place your hands on your knees. If you want to try a hand mudra, place your hands on your knees with your palms facing upwards. Then touch your thumb to your pointer finer with the other three fingers stretched outwards.

In yoga examples you will find that this is a key way to meditate. The mudra is a powerful position for your hands as it represents the past, present and future. Think of this pose as a great way to stretch out your whole body. Press your hips into the ground while stretching your spine up towards the ceiling, right to the crown of your head.

You want to be really laid-back so make certain that there is no stress in your face, jaw or shoulder joints. Your tongue should rest gently behind your front teeth, just touching the roof of your mouth. Keep breathing deeply and hold this position as long as you feel comfortable. You will help lengthen your spine and will also find a lot of inner peace with this pose as you empty out your mind in this pose.

Many people say that “laughter is the best medicine” and quite a number of people roll their eyes when they hear people say that “laughter is the best medicine”. But all facts considered, laughter has been shown to help improve the health and general well being of patients.

So the next time if you feel the urge to stifle a laugh, don’t. People who laugh more are generally less prone to chronic ailments. Laugher has been shown to boost the immune system and help undo the more serious effects of depression. It has also been shown to protect the heart from premature malfunction and has been attributed to have a beneficial effect on an extremely wide variety of ailments.

Oddly enough, even faked and forced laughter has been shown to have the same benefits as real laughter on a physiological level. Laughing yoga is a modern day adaptation of ancient Indian practices with a view on trying to make the benefits of both yoga and laughter attainable.

Laughing Releases Tension

If you watch a lot of television, you would probably have heard of laughing yoga by now. Laughing yoga, or Laughter yoga, as it is properly called, is a system of exercises influenced by traditional yoga techniques, which aims to release tension in an individual. It was developed by Mumbai, India-based physician Dr. Madan Kataria. The first club started in 1995 and now there are over 5000 of these clubs in 40 countries. These are mostly free and for public use. If laughter really is the best medicine, Patch Adams clearly has nothing on Dr. Kataria.

The exercises in laughing yoga involve yoga breathing and stretching, just like in most other yoga schools of thought. The biggest distinction is in the chanting of sounds of simulated laughter and clapping while the exercises are being done. When done correctly, practicing laughing yoga will result in… you guessed it, real laughter.

Laughing yoga as a practice is quite physical, though not nearly as strenuous as other types of yoga. The difficulty of the sessions is easily scalable to suit the motivations and abilities of the students. The practice of this kind of yoga is intended to be don primarily in group, though it could be done alone when needed. Sessions are quite short, usually lasting less than half an hour.

Dr. Madan Kataria also envisioned laughing yoga to have another purpose as well. She envisioned it to promote world peace through personal transformation with a view on eliminating boundaries put up by religion and sectarianism.

There are many kinds of yoga exercises, all which seem to have derived from the original eight stages of reaching a state of bliss. The most popular kind of yoga is Hatha-Yoga, which focuses on the poses and breathing techniques thereby helping to encourage good health.

A nice thing about yoga is that you don’t need any fancy equipment in order to practice it. A positive attitude is all you need to bring. Clothing does not have to be special either. Simply wear some loose fitting, non-restrictive clothing.

Many people like to practice yoga in a class but there is no reason you cannot simply find a quiet spot in your house to start. Ensure that there are no distractions, it is quiet, clean and has plenty of air flow. A soft mat may be handy together with a blanket and a pillow which will help give you some form of support and added comfort for the laying or sitting down positions. Yoga is normally practiced barefoot, so you don’t need any expensive shoes though you may wish to wear some socks or soft shoes.

Try not to eat a heavy meal for at least two or three hours before doing any yoga exercises. You do not want to have a full feeling as you are moving through the exercises. You can eat some fruit or an energy bar and drink a glass of juice an hour or so before doing yoga. Drink plenty of water as you perform your yoga exercises as you will tend to get dehydrated.

Many people like to practice yoga first thing in the morning as it helps to revitalise the mind and body using the postures and breathing techniques. Others prefer to exercise at night to help unwind from a busy and stressful day. It is perfectly fine to do both. You simply have to find the best time that suits you for your yoga exercises.

Yoga positions for beginners always start with easy poses, building up to the more difficult poses. Never strain yourself, and pause when you feel pain or fatigue. It is beneficial to relax between difficult exercises.

Yoga is best done daily. You can do as little as 15 minutes of exercises and 15 minutes of breathing and meditation each day and you will start to reap the benefits.

The question “What is Yoga?” is not the type of question that is answered simply or in depth in such a short space. The practice of yoga has numerous unique schools of thought and varying opinions. In ancient Hinduism, the term “yoga” is more or less a general one, similar to the word “biology” or “physics”.

For the vast majorities of Hindius, the word “yoga” stands for a type of “technology of the spirit” (even though it doesn’t actually translate directly into that), which involves meditation, asceticism. The main goal of “yoga” in this type of circumstance is to get a more beneficial understanding of yourself, of nature, and of the various concepts of existence itself.

Ideas as well as beliefs have been influenced outside of the Indian subcontinent by yoga. Buddism in all of its various forms has been highly shaped by the constructs behind yoga, as has the numerous other asian philosophies and religions. For disciples of other religions, the question of “what is yoga” will be different in a significant way. There are many people who will carry out practices that are highly influenced through the use of yoga without really knowing what it is.

What is Yoga in the Western Environment?

For western culture yoga is a relatively new introduction. It was first introduced in the latter half of the nineteenth century by Swami Vivekananda, an Indian spiritual philosopher and spiritual leader whose speeches on the philosophy behind Indian culture and yoga mesmerized audiences in both the United States as well as the United Kingdom.

He passed away at a relatively young age in his late 30’s, however the seeds of ideas that he planted would later develop into the current day practice of yoga in Western society. The counter-culture of western society that sprung up in the latter half of the twentieth century. It’s assorted interests in many things Eastern furnished the practice of yoga with the drive it required to arise into the prevalent practice in western culture that it is today.

Yoga in the context of western culture affiliated with Hatha Yoga postures or “asanas” as a type of exercise. Even though there are traditionally only 6 styles of orthodox yoga, (Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga) people in western culture have integrated various ideas from these types of schools of thought with each other or even with completely foreign concepts to arrive at other types of styles which might arguably be named “yoga”. Amongst these are “laughing yoga” and “chair yoga”.

In the west yoga is very well liked, particularly in the United State of America. People in America spend in excess of 3 billion dollars each year on classes for yoga as well as associated accessories. Whether or not this Commodification of a ritual that is ancient is helpful or not to the overall practice is debatable; however it does beg more in depth questions on “what is yoga” and what it’s practices stand for.

What is Yoga And How Does It Benefit a Person?

There have been many different benefits that have been shown to the practitioners of yoga. Firstly, the traditional forms of practices pf yoga have shown to enhance strength, flexibility, endurance, as well as general well being and lower the psychological stress and trauma.

Helpful effects on people suffering from asthma as well as individuals with heart conditions who practice yoga breathing techniques have also been demonstrated. There have also been numerous other advantages to using yoga that have been claimed, however unfortunately, not all of them have been proven.

“What is yoga” is a question that is no so easily answered in depth in such a short space. The practice has so many different schools of thought and differing opinions. In Hinduism, the term “yoga” is a general one, kind of like the word “physics” or “biology”.

For most Hindus, the word “yoga” means a kind of “technology of the spirit” (though it does not translate directly into that, mind you), which involves meditation, asceticism. The ultimate goal of “yoga” in this context is to have a better understanding of oneself, of nature, and of the concepts behind existence itself.

Yoga has also influenced ideas and beliefs outside of the Indian Subcontinent. Buddhism in all its forms has been heavily influenced by the concepts behind yoga, as has many other Asian religions and philosophies. For adherents of different religions, the question of “what is yoga” will significantly differ. Many will even carry out practices influenced by yoga without knowing what it is.

What is Yoga in the Western Context?

Yoga is a relatively new introduction to western culture. It was introduced in the latter half of the 19th century by Swami Vivekananda, an Indian spiritual leader and philosopher whose lectures on Indian philosophy and yoga electrified audiences in both the United Kingdom and the United States.

He died relatively young, in his late 30s, but the seeds he planted would later grow into the modern day practice of yoga in Western society. The western counter-culture that sprang up in the latter half of the 20th century and its interests in things Eastern gave the practice of yoga the impetus it needed to be the prevalent practice in western culture it s today.

Yoga in the western context associated with Hatha Yoga postures or “asanas” or as an exercise. Though traditionally there are only 6 orthodox styles of yoga, (Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Raja Yoga) westerner have incorporated ideas from these traditional schools of though with each other or with totally foreign concepts to come up with other styles which could arguable be called “yoga”. Among these are “laughing yoga” and “chair yoga”.

Yoga is quite popular in the west, especially in the United States. Americans pay in excess of 3 billion dollars a year on yoga classes and accessories. Whether or not this Commodification of an ancient ritual is beneficial to the practice or not is arguable; it does however, beg deeper questions on “what is yoga” and what its practices signify.

What is Yoga Good For?

The practice of yoga has been demonstrated to have many beneficial effects for its practitioners. First off, the practice of traditional forms of yoga has been proven to enhance flexibility, strength, endurance, and general well-being as well as reduce psychological stress and trauma.

Beneficial effects on asthma sufferers and people with heart conditions who practice yoga breathing exercises have also been demonstrated. There are also many other benefits to practicing yoga that have been touted, but unfortunately, not all of them have been proven.

Kriya yoga is a form of yoga that is specifically taught by lineages of Lahiri Mahasaya. Lahiri Mahasaya claims that he has revived this form of yoga which was initially lost in the older days. Today, many disciples and descendants of Lahiri Mahayasay are teaching Kriya yoga all over the world. This form of yoga focuses on controlling our life force through our spine and trying to help individuals deal with self realization.

Kriya yoga was supposed to be widely practiced in ancient India but was soon lost in time when citizens had more and more things to do and the priests became less forthright with the ways of the yoga. In the year 1861, Kahiri Mahasaya received initiation to the ways of the Kriya yoga through Mahavatar Babaji who was the immortal yogi.

As the immortal yogi gave the initiation to Lahiri Mahsaya. He was said to have confirmed that the form of yoga he is teaching Lahiri Mahasaya is the very same form of yoga that was given by Krishna to Arjuna and was later spread far and wide.

The Principles of Kriya Yoga

The system of Kriya yoga is supposed to bring the believers spiritual development to fore and bring about a state of peace, tranquility and openness to God. The system also brings you control of your life force and self realization.

The actions or movements that an individual performs during the yoga are all centered to bring the person release from obstruction blocking both the mind and the body. Kriya yoga includes mantras and various meditation techniques that enhance self control and exerts control over your body and mind.

There are several techniques included with Kriya yoga and these are preparing the mind and the body, the practice of mantras, controlling the life force, initiation, control over self, and self-realization. In preparing the body some basic stretching and bending are used while in preparing the mind believers of Kriya yoga are taught laws of general conduct and good behavior. The practice of mantra helps to teach the seeker how to use mantras to achieve what they seek.

Controlling the essence of life force, initiation, self control and self realization are all techniques that help to release oneself from the shackles of our mind and body. The Kriya yoga can help a person achieve control over energy flow, and helps us center on our spine as the source of our life force.
